The Republic of Congo also known as Congo-Brazzaville, is a country in Central Africa.
It is bordered by four countries: Gabon to the West, Cameroon to the Northwest, the Central African Republic to the Northeast, and the Democratic Republic to the Southeast. The region was dominated by Bantu-speaking tribes for at least 3,000 years, who built trade links leading into the Congo River Basin. Congo was formerly part of the French colony of Equatorial Africa. The Republic of the Congo, was established on November 28, 1958, but granted Independence from France in 1960. The Sovereign State has had multi-party elections since 1992, and although a democratically elected government was ousted in 1977, President Dennis Sassou Nguesso, who first came to power in 1979, has ruled for the past 41 years.
The Mfouambila Kongo Dance Company was founded in 2015, under the Directorship of Jean Andoche Hilarion Loubaki, from Brazzaville, Congo, to promote Central African culture through dialogue, theater, and history. Mfouambila Kongo seeks to enrich everyone's lives through Congolese dance and music through an expression of culture, songs, music, chants, call and response, and storytelling, which keeps alive the rich culture of the various ethnic groups within the Congo. In the Lari language,“Mfouambila” means energy, and they bring to life the ancient Congolese traditions of Ngoma drumming, songs and dance, through their high energy performances that depict everyday Congolese culture. Mfouambila Kongo is a performing arts theater company that takes the audience to Central Africa, where rituals, spiritual and musical presentations gives insight into the Congolese traditional way of life. Mfouambila Kongo is comprised of traditional dancers and musicians who present Congolese culture through classes, theater, Conferences, drum and dance workshops with guest artists who are versed in Congolese culture.
The Mfouambila Kongo members are Andoche Loubaki, Shana Mejia, Cheritha Saulsby, Daliah Farrar, Mary Guillermo, Luna Sol, Fumu Jahmez, Roccsy Mahania, Ajay Duggan, Bobby, Fitzgerald Sam, and Olutunji Ojore.
In Keeping with Congolese traditions the introduction of contemporary music and dance styles from Congo are influential throughout all of Africa. Through collaboration with other artists from Congo, we also incorporate the old with the new through choreography, music, and dance, which allows Congolese dance to remain fresh and invigorating.
Mfouambila Kongo invites everyone to engage in dialogue through seminars and workshops that seek to preserve the culture of all people from Central Africa.
